SERVE AT THE TOBACCO ROAD MARATHON
5:30am-2:30pm
The NWCC Family is excited to be mobilized to serve the Tobacco Road Marathon instead of gathering at White Oak Elementary School.
The Tobacco Road Marathon is one way that we can practically engage with our community. Our aim will be to bless our community with the love of Christ through our actions as we come alongside fans, runners, and other volunteers while we serve together. Our hope is to engage in meaningful conversations while we pass out water, direct runners at trail crossings, and cheer alongside of their family and friends.
FEAST + CELEBRATE WITH THE NW FAMILY
2:30pm
Join us back at the property at 2:30pm for a short time of worship & stories before we eat together! Bring your camp chairs or picnic blanket. We’ll have a bounce house + human size inflatable game of hungry hungry hippo!
Please RSVP so we have a head count for food.
Building boundaries will be marked out so you can get an idea of the potential spaces we’re hoping to to build. This will be a great chance to ask questions, share ideas and dream together about the future of how God might use this property.

Parking + FAQs
Orange Star: Fan Zone Tent/Snack Station
Red Star: Water Station
Parking: If you’re able, please park in the NWCC Parking Field off Vandiver Way. We’ll reserve the gravel parking lot for those that are unable to walk from the Parking Field as well as easier access for neighbors to reach the Marathon.
You may also park at the Copperleaf Pool parking lot. Since the marathon runs along Morrisville Parkway in this area, there is more chances for traffic back-ups getting to this location.
TIP: If you’re coming from Cary Park, Amberly, Stonewater, Carolina Preserve, Yates Store Road crosses over the Tobacco Trail via a bridge and connects to East Ferrell Rd.- making it one of the ideal ways to get to NWCC’s property!
WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Please arrive at your station no later than 15min before your timeslot begins. It is important that you plan for additional time for race traffic, parking, and walking to your location. For some it may take 5-10 minutes to walk to your station for others it may take 15-20. Please plan accordingly so that you are at your station at least 15 minutes before your shift begins.

- 11:00am-1:00pm -Dan & Angie Krissell
- 1:00-2:30pm – Ed Hogan
Race Schedule:
The water station we are sponsoring is located at miles 2 for full and half marathon runners, mile 12 for half marathoners and mile 24 for full marathoners. Below are estimated runner times to give us an idea of when we should expect the highest peak times.
- 7:00am – Full and half marathon starts

- 8:10 AM – likely first half marathon finisher
- 9:30 AM – likely first full marathon finisher
- 1:30 PM – last runner arrives at mile 24 water station
Instructions for Tasks at the Water Station:
Below are Detailed instructions from the Tobacco Road marathon officials regarding set up, mixing Gatorade, filling cups, serving drinks, cleaning up and breaking down.
Setup (5:30-7:00am)
- Gatorade tables should be a 20’ or more from the water table help runners differentiate between them
- Trash bags should be placed a good distance from the end of the tables
- Most runners will drop trash/cups near a trash bag if it is far enough away from the end of the tables
Mixing the Gatorade (Set up and as needed throughout the race)
- Mix in trashcans with DOUBLE LINERS (liners/trash bags provided).
- Pour the water into a trashcan with DOUBLE LINERS
- Mix 1 bottle of Gatorade Endurance with 5 gallons (1 bottle) of water
- Stir with the paddle
Repeat this process with one 5-gallon bottle at a time to fill the trashcan.
Filling the Cups (setup and throughout the race)
- Dip the pitchers into the trash cans to fill them
- Pour from the pitchers to fill the ½ to ¾ full
- DO NOT top off the cups – runners will spill a majority of the drink if they are too full
Serving the drinks(throughout the race)
- Wear gloves, provided
- Be loud and tell runners “water first and Gatorade second”
- Call out what you have “water right here” or “Gatorade right here”
- Hold the cup so runners can easily take it from your hand
In your ‘free time’: In the gaps between the full marathoners and half marathoners
- Restock the table for the next wave of runners
- Collect trash
Breaking down(12:00-2:00pm): Very late in the race you will begin to see large gaps between runners. This is a good time to consolidate tables down to 1 table of water and 1 table of Gatorade and begin cleanup. At some point you may even be able to break the stop down into 1 combined table. DO NOT break down the stop entirely and leave until the last runner has passed! These runners already know where they stand on race day and they will not need to be reminded at each of the aid stations. The last runner deserves as much applause and support as the winner on race day.
Leaving: Your captain will let everyone know when it is time to leave. Before you leave, please walk a short distance in both directions to clean up as much trash as possible.
Emergencies: Life or death medical emergency? CALL 911 then contact the race headquarters at 919-633.5829
Non-Emergencies: direct runners to these locations if they wish to drop out or are have non-medical emergencies
- Sag Wagon: on the trail at Morrisville Parkway: miles 2.5 & 10.5 for the half, miles 2.5, 14.5, & 23.5 for the full
- EMS: on the trail at White Oak Road: miles 4 & 10 for the half; miles 15 and 23 for the

Whatever you are handing out, say it loudly “Honey Stingers Here.”, “Tailwinds drink here”…. During down times pick up trash in both directions of the station.
Mixing instructions:
The tailwinds endurance drinks are a powder mixed with water. Place one full bag of the Tailwinds powder in an empty 3 gallon Gatorade dispenser. Fill the dispenser with water from the 5 gal jug until a little over ¾ full (you just want enough room to stir without spilling). 1 bag of Tailwinds makes 3 gallons of drink.

Fill cups ½ – 3/4 full. Runners will spill most of the drink if the cup is too full.
Finishing your shift:
Please wait until the next shift arrives before leaving the snack station. Make sure to share with them any tips and tricks you may have learned during your shift.
We should see the final runner come through the station at around 1:30. If you are working the last shift please clean up and break down the station.

- Dump out any leftover drinks and cups.
